Pro Active Security

These days its hard to find people that have not fallen to the GPS craze , with all the specials going on these days every second car that is on the road has a GPS device wither built in or attached to the windscreen.

Unfortunately one small little fact that people fail to realize is that we live in South Africa. Due to the high rate of crime chances of getting hijacked are very high these days. What more can a hijacker ask for when he is hijacking you than a map to your house.

Consider this , when hijacked the average person has most of their possessions taken away .Now that you have had your keys stolen your car taken away and most of the time your cell phone as well. All the hijacker needs to do then is follow the GPS all the way to your house and help them selves to more of your possessions.

So just a few points to note.

  • Never attach your car keys to the house keys.
  • Never leave your home address marked as a place on your GPS , if you have to name it some thing else.
  • Try to keep your cell phone on you and not in the car’s cubby or some place that if hijacked will result in you loosing the phone

While this not a exhaustive list please keep them in mind and stay safe.
Always remember better safe than sorry.

From the dark depths of sql comes ……..

Its surprising the things that you can find and do with sql, especially MS SQL. My particular example comes from a little exercise that i had to perform.

The exercise seemed pretty simple at face value. I was to select all the required data from a certain table for a report but I had to add an extra column at the end that contained all the child record ID’s for that specific record. The ID’s had to be comma separated so that it could be interpreted by who ever was going to read it.

Attributes And C#

After using c# for a while now for both front end development as well as back end development one of the most under used features that i have come across is attributes.

Attributes bring out one of the most important and one of the most under used parts of the .Net library .Yes what i am talking about is meta data. The stuff that makes your intellisense so easy to use and well as a number of other things in the library.

Software Update != Simple

<rant>

Software changes and updates are inevitable , no matter how perfect you make your software there will always be changes that need to be made to it. Whether its a request from a client or a bug fix or even a security fix, your software is always going to need a update.

Give and i shall take

Recently i have acquired quite a few games for my xbox 360 , some were great others were not so great but pretty ok in the end i guess.

Of particular note was DMC 4. After i bought the game i didn’t get a chance to play it right away since i was quite into COD 4 multi-player. But any way when i did get around and started playing the game i was surprised to see what a good game it was.
