Security Summit

Security Summit

So its been just over a week since Security summit has happened and I have put this post of for way to long.

For those that do not know what the Security Summit is first of all click on the link , if you are too lazy to do that then just know that it is a Information Security conference run in South Africa (though there is alot more to it that I haven’t discussed).

This has been my first official Info Sec conference and I must say the bar has been set pretty high, all around the talks were great and the presenters knew what they were talking about. If you haven’t been to the event before I would highly recommend it.

While I would like to go into detail about every talk that was given I don’t think my attention span would last that long. But the most notable talks for me had to be the ones give by Joe Grand (I Attended Both) ,the ROP talk by Dino Dai Zovi and without a doubt the talk by Saumil Shah (Surviving the Internet in 2010).

Now while the talks were great things on their own what made attending the conference legendary was the fact that I got to chat and socialize with the speakers during the breaks or after their talks. Now because I was not sure if I would ever get the chance to meet any of the speakers again I made the most of every second I could when chatting to them. If you are one of the people that I chatted with and I wasted your time interrogating you please do forgive me its not often that I get to meet rockstars :P.

Now onto the one thing that annoyed me a little. I try to keep up with whats going around me in Info Sec field this means that I read every post that I can get my hand , listen to every podcast that I know of and listen to what people say in general (mostly on twitter). So for the most part I like to think that I know whats going on. What this means is that at some point I have heard some  of the information that was presented at the conference which was a little bit of a let down (though in all honesty I didn’t really expect any Odays , it just wouldn’t have suited the audience). But all in all it was still awesome hearing the talk being presented by the speaker live instead of on a video or a podcast.

The next event to look forward to is SA’s own ZaCon (which happens on the 2 October 2010), granted there are plenty others con’s that will take place in the mean time but ZaCon is the only one that I can personally attend. While on that note ZaCon has sent out the !CFP to those that want to talk but need help , if this is something that you find interesting then get in contact with the ZaCon crew and they will gladly help.

Finally I would like to just like to send a shout out to everyone that made it possible for me to attend the event and to everyone that helped out with introductions to the relevant rock stars. It was also a honor to meet a lot of the local info sec peeps and put names to the faces.

Just thought I would share this with anyone interested

Found a simple though freaking awesome plugin for miranda that allows you to see which contacts are online a while back, it also sends notifications when a contact is online of offline.

You can do more advanced things like sending and replying to messages without opening Miranda by simply typing messages on the LCD.

Grab the plugin from here.

And Miranda from here.

I am not sure where or if its even possible to get a classic G15 anymore but these plugins should still work on the new keyboards. Example below.

Top of my contact list

Use it don’t use it , its up to you.

Logitech_N700_Lapdesk_Views

Logitech_N700_Lapdesk_Views

So a few weeks a go I managed to give the N700 a nice run in while while Phant1m was reviewing it.

So here are a few quick things that I picked up while using it. Firstly its quite weighty , this is not a problem unless your laptop is quite heavy as well. The only reason I bring this up is because the laptop I have is considered a desktop replacement which means it is freaking heavy compared to most laptops making moving the two devices around a mission of note.

Other than that the device is brilliant , the sound quality is brilliant and doesn’t need any additional drivers when plugged into the pc. The fan keeps the laptop pretty cool (though nothing amazing) , I am just happy that is doesn’t burn my legs when I start gaming (the graphics card and processor gets ridiculously hot).

For a better review have a look at Phant1m’s review over at Technorant.

So while I wait for this device to be released in SA I think I am going to have to stick to gaming on a table top to avoid scalding myself permanently :P

Steam_Specials_Day_2

So the next round of specials have been released , and its a Battle Stations and Order Of War bundle.

Get them while you can

Steam_Daily_Specials

Steam_Daily_Specials

Steam is running a daily specials on different titles from Edios and Square Enix. Today’s games on special are some of the best classics ever.

You can get all the Hitman games + Both Deus Ex Games for $17 .Personally if I didn’t already have these games I would have bought them again.

Of the 2 I have to say that if you haven’t played Deus Ex 1 you are missing out on the best conspiracy theory RPG ever , if you haven’t played it then go and get it now.

Gaming_in_the_future

Gaming_in_the_future

Steam thinks I am so cool that I went to the future and then came back to the past so that I can show off :P , to those not familiar the last column indicates when i last played the game.

PS : No I did not go and change the system date , it managed to do this all on its own

Steam UI Beta

Steam UI Beta

So Steam recently released its beta UI and all i can say is finally.

While the old UI worked there was so much that could be improved on , in particular the in game overlay and not to mention its built in download manager.

This release fixes these issues and a whole lot more , now i am not going to waste your time so head over to the site and check out the full details.

If you would like to activate this in steam all you need to do is go to , Settings -> Account -> Beta Participation and select UI Update. Finally hit OK and restart steam.

I should warn you that things are likely to change so make the most of the UI while you can. But do beware of weird things that could happen , in my case for some reason my MW2 was rendered useless and needed to be redownloaded.

So please sure you make a back up of your most important games you have been warned. There is nothig worse than having to re-download 30 gigs of games in SA
