Security Summit
So its been just over a week since Security summit has happened and I have put this post of for way to long.
For those that do not know what the Security Summit is first of all click on the link , if you are too lazy to do that then just know that it is a Information Security conference run in South Africa (though there is alot more to it that I haven’t discussed).
This has been my first official Info Sec conference and I must say the bar has been set pretty high, all around the talks were great and the presenters knew what they were talking about. If you haven’t been to the event before I would highly recommend it.
While I would like to go into detail about every talk that was given I don’t think my attention span would last that long. But the most notable talks for me had to be the ones give by Joe Grand (I Attended Both) ,the ROP talk by Dino Dai Zovi and without a doubt the talk by Saumil Shah (Surviving the Internet in 2010).
Now while the talks were great things on their own what made attending the conference legendary was the fact that I got to chat and socialize with the speakers during the breaks or after their talks. Now because I was not sure if I would ever get the chance to meet any of the speakers again I made the most of every second I could when chatting to them. If you are one of the people that I chatted with and I wasted your time interrogating you please do forgive me its not often that I get to meet rockstars :P.
Now onto the one thing that annoyed me a little. I try to keep up with whats going around me in Info Sec field this means that I read every post that I can get my hand , listen to every podcast that I know of and listen to what people say in general (mostly on twitter). So for the most part I like to think that I know whats going on. What this means is that at some point I have heard some of the information that was presented at the conference which was a little bit of a let down (though in all honesty I didn’t really expect any Odays , it just wouldn’t have suited the audience). But all in all it was still awesome hearing the talk being presented by the speaker live instead of on a video or a podcast.
The next event to look forward to is SA’s own ZaCon (which happens on the 2 October 2010), granted there are plenty others con’s that will take place in the mean time but ZaCon is the only one that I can personally attend. While on that note ZaCon has sent out the !CFP to those that want to talk but need help , if this is something that you find interesting then get in contact with the ZaCon crew and they will gladly help.
Finally I would like to just like to send a shout out to everyone that made it possible for me to attend the event and to everyone that helped out with introductions to the relevant rock stars. It was also a honor to meet a lot of the local info sec peeps and put names to the faces.
